It has been reported that the level of prostaglandin in inflamed gallbladder increases. Acute biliary colic with prostaglandin synthase inhibitor (indomethacin) can relieve pain. Arachidonic acid plays an important role in the production and maintenance of inflammation. It can generate prostaglandin E (PGE) through the cyclooxygenase system and produce leukotriene through the lipoxygenase system. PGE has to make blood vessels expand, increase vascular permeability, release of tissue pus, causing pain and fever and so on. Prostaglandin F (PGF) can cause vasoconstriction, reduce vascular permeability. Cyclooxygenase inhibitors increase lipoxygenase activity and stimulate leukotriene production that contributes to inflammation.
