What do British people think Americans are like? The British think Americans are very strange. They make a lot of noise and they laugh too loudly. They are rich, and they only think about money. But the British do say that Americans are kind, friendly people. They’re happy to help you if you are in trouble.
What do Americans think of the British? Well, they think the British are cold and very unfriendly. They are not interested in success or in making lots of money. They think Britain is the best country in the world. They look down on other countries. But Americans say that the British are quite hard workers. They are brave and honest. And in time of trouble they face difficulties happily.

I’m seventeen. I had worked as a box boy at a supermarket in Los Angeles. People came to the counter and you put things in their bags for them. And carried things to their cars. It was hard work.
While working, you wear a plate with your name on it. I once met someone I knew years ago. I remembered his name and said, “Mr. Castle, how are you?” We talked about this and that. As he left he said,“It was nice talking to you, Brett.” I felt great he remembered me. Then I looked down at my name plate. Oh, no. He didn’t remember me at all. He just read the name plate. I wish I had put “Irving” down on my name plate. If he’d have said, “Oh yes, Irving, how could I forget you?”I’d have been ready for him. There’s nothing personal here.
The manager and everyone else who were a step above the box boys often shouted orders. One of these was: you couldn’t accept tips(小费). Okay, I’m outside and I put the bags in the car. For a lot of people, the natural reaction(反应) is to take a quarter and give it to me. I’d say, “I’m sorry, I can’t.” They’d get angry. When you give someone a tip, you’re sort of being polite. You take a quarter and you put it in their hand and you expect them to say, “Oh, thanks a lot.” When you say,“I’m sorry. I can’t.” They feel a little put down. They say,“No one will know.” And they put it in your pocket. You say,“I really can’t.” It gets to a point where you almost have to hurt a person physically(身体上的)
to prevent him from tipping you. It was not in agreement with the store’s belief in being friendly. Accepting tips was a friendly thing and made the customer feel good. I just couldn’t understand the strangeness of some people’s ideas. One lady actually put it in my pocket, got in the car, and drove away. I would have had to throw the quarter at her or eaten it or something.
I had decided that one year was enough. Some people needed the job to stay alive and fed. I guess I had the means and could afford to hate it and give it up.
   5. What can be the best title for this text?____.
   A. How Hard Life for Box Boys B. Getting Along with Customers
   C. Why I Gave up My Job D. The Art of Taking Tips
   6. From the second paragraph, we can infer that ____.
   A. the writer didn’t like the impersonal part of his job
   B. with a name plate, people can easily start talking
   C. Mr Castle mistook Irving for Brett
   D. Irving was the writer’s real name
   7. The box boy refused to accept tips because ____.
   A. customers only gave small tips
   B. some customers had strange ideas about tipping
   C. the store forbade the box boys to take tips
   D. he didn’t want to fight with the customers
   8. The underlined phrase “put down” in the third paragraph probably means “____”.
   A. misunderstood B. defeated C. hateful D. hurt

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things. The pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine, the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend(hurt) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing(批评) and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation(模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrong doings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact(接触) with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.
   9. The phrase “sour the pleasure of society” most nearly means ____.
   A. have a good taste with social life
   B. make others unhappy
   C. tend to scold others openly
   D. enjoy the pleasure of life
  10. We can conclude from the passage that ____.
   A. we should pity all such unhappy people
   B. such unhappy people are dangerous to social life
   C. people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness
   D. unhappy people can not understand happy persons
  11. If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author
   suggests that people should ____.
   A. prevent any communication with them
   B. show no respect and politeness to them
   C. persuade them to recognize the bad effects
   D. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes
  12. In this passage, the writer mainly ____.
   A. describes two types of people
   B. laughs at the unhappy people
   C. suggests ways to help unhappy people
   D. tells people how to be happy in life

Earthquake, the Biggest Disaster of Nature
Earthquakes are one of the most deadly natural disasters in the world. They happen more frequently than you would expect.
In the 24 hours after you read this, 400 to 500 earthquakes will shake the earth. You won’t notice most of them because you live in a relatively stable area or the quake is too far away or because the quake will be too small to notice.
Earthquakes are caused by sudden breaks in rock masses deep in the earth. Rock masses are always under very high pressure. If the pressure in a certain area becomes too much and the rock masses break, an earthquake happens. But exactly when the rock masses reach the breaking point is a mystery.
China is located on the Eurasia plate, where earthquakes happen frequently due to the earth’s plates knocking against each other. Up to 17,139 earthquakes have taken place in China in the past 44 years, according to scientific research.
Earthquakes can do great harm to us. When a big earthquake happens, buildings will fall down and bridges and crops will be destroyed. What’s worse, animals’ and humans’ lives will be in danger. Many may lose their lives. When a big earthquake happened in Tangshan, China in 1976, the whole city was almost destroyed and many people were killed.
As a result of this, we should really try to predict when an earthquake may happen. We can make a study of the past earthquakes to find some rules. And we can try to find out how animals behave before the earthquake happens. If we predict an earthquake before it happens, we can greatly decrease the cost of the earthquakes. It is really a good thing and well worth doing.
  1. How many earthquakes shake the earth in an hour?
  2. How does an earthquake happen?
  3. Why did the writer write the passage?(不超过8个字)
  4. What does the fifth paragraph tell us?
  5. Faced with the great harm of earthquakes, what should we do?
  6. As we all know, sometimes it is impossible to avoid disasters. When a disaster happens, what should we do? The following passage is an answer. Try to read the passage and fill in a word in each blank according to the first letter.
