With the imminent historic moment of China’s resumption of sovereignty over Hong Kong in 1997, Hong Kong is in a transitional phase in all aspects of politics, economy, society, and culture. The actual situation and social mentality of language use will face major changes. In September 1985, all primary schools in Hong Kong officially set up Putonghua courses. In 1990, the newly announced syllabus of the Education Department added the value of Chinese language learning and the significance of cultural heritage to make teaching goals more complete. In September 1992, the “Chinese Language and Culture” subject was added to the sixth and seventh grades of secondary school, filling in the preparatory Chinese language for decades.
