In the history of national independence waged by the Filipino people against Spanish colonial rule and the invasion of the United States, the performance of a well-known overseas Chinese general Liu Heng-ch’uan (1872-1926) was recorded. At the age of 18, Liu Hengkui started his career as a tutor at his uncle’s iron shop in Fujian from the East Ferry Terminal in Fujian Province. He managed to operate a private shop alone and was the head of the triad society of overseas Chinese in Manila. From the very beginning of the anti-colonial rule in the Philippines in 1896, he led more than 3,000 overseas Chinese to the Revolutionary Army, being awarded the title of Captain Infantry. When the Revolutionary Army lacked weapons, he volunteered to establish an arsenal and was appointed chief of the arsenal to make armaments. In March 1897 he was at Ius
