《野草在歌唱》表现的是殖民地白人生活,小说叙述总是聚焦于矛盾,和殖民权力话语形成对峙关系的是日常化的现实生活。小说先后聚焦于托尼、玛丽与迪克,这三个人物就像三个楔子,直指殖民话语的矛盾处,揭示了殖民文化价值标准的双重性、殖民价值观念与现实生活规则的冲突所造成的殖民地白人对自我文化身份的质疑和主体意识的混乱。
