Hedgehog signaling pathway is an important regulator of endocrine gland development. In recent years, the regulatory role of Desert Hedgehog (Dhh) in testicular gonadal development has attracted much attention, especially for Leydig cells. In the testes, Dhh is produced by the paracrine Sertoli cells and acts on Leydig cells, which regulates its proliferation, differentiation and the function of secreting testosterone. Testosterone secretion is crucial for testicular development, spermatogenesis, and maintenance of the male phenotype, so proper regulation of Dhh is a prerequisite for spermatogenesis. The study of Hedgehog signaling pathway in testis will also have potential significance in the study of pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical treatment of androgen deficiency and spermatogenesis disorders.
