江苏南通“小豌”为我县农家传统豌豆品种,该品种在我县种植普遍,这个品种特点是菜肥兼用,荚尖兼用,既可作蔬菜,又可作经济绿肥.在植株个体利用上,既可食荚,又可食嫩尖。该品种节密荚多结荚性强,鲜荚皮薄肉嫩化渣爽口,嫩尖肥大,味道鲜美,质地优良。据1987年品比区测定:在7个参试品种中(本地的南通小豌、草豌、白玉豌以及四川的团结豌2号,无须豆尖1号、食荚大菜豌以及北京的中豌4号)无论在鲜荚产量,豆尖产量以及鲜草产量等方面均名列前茅。生产上一般鲜荚单产达200多公斤,鲜尖单产400多公
