Objective To investigate the effects of modified microvascular decompression on hemifacial spasm and its complications. Methods A retrospective analysis of 254 cases of hemifacial spasm surgery in our hospital, in July 2004 the traditional microvascular decompression was the traditional group (108 cases), in July 2004 after the revision of microvascular decompression was modified (146 cases). The curative effect of hemifacial spasm and hemifacial paralysis and the complication of auditory nerve injury in two groups were observed. Results In the conventional group, 96 cases (88.89%) had facial muscle spasm disappeared or improved, 14 cases (12.96%) had facial paralysis, and 7 cases (6.48%) had acoustic nerve injury. There were 141 cases (96.58%) with facial muscle spasm disappeared or improved in operation, 8 cases (5.48%) had facial paralysis, and 0.68% (1 case) had auditory nerve injury. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P <0.05 ). Conclusions The modified microvascular decompression in patients with hemifacial spasm can improve the cure rate and reduce the incidence of complications.
