Evaluation of Iron Hats in Prospecting Exploration In prospecting exploration, it is necessary to distinguish between sulphide-derived iron-rich corundum (“iron cap”) and other “iron oxides.” These iron oxides include breccia, silicate conglomerate, laterite, iron-rich rock, weathered taconite, jasperite and chert. Where the appearance of similar iron oxides on the earth’s surface due to the weathering of various types of protoliths is distinguishable, it is extremely difficult to distinguish them. From the prospect of prospecting, it is advisable to consider the outcrops of all iron-bearing rocks as iron oxides until they can be separated by class. Once a true iron cap is confirmed, the next job is to determine the economic significance of underlying mineralization.
