浙江省余姚市田螺山遗址农耕遗迹剖面硅藻、植物硅酸体和种子分析显示中国东部全新世最高海平面出现在距今7000年以前.全新世中期海退以后东部沿海地区形成大面积的湿地平原,诞生以稻作生产为特征的河姆渡等新石器时代文化.全新世中期海平面仍然有过多次波动,其中在6.4~6.3和4.6~2.1kaBP的两次海水入侵是全新世海退期以后的较大2次海面波动,另外在6.3~4.6kaBP湿地草原植被时段,也曾经发生过若干次规模很小、时间短暂的海水向陆地推进的过程.尽管海退期海平面上升的影响范围和强度可能不及高海平面时期,但同样对先民的生活和生产活动产生了深刻的影响.田螺山遗址农耕遗迹剖面研究结果显示,全新世中期以后强度较大的海平面波动时,海水向陆地推进,淹没大片农田;强度较弱的海平面波动时,海水倒灌,土壤盐分升高,水稻产量下降.海平面上升对稻作生产的影响引起了先民食物结构中稻米比重下降,采集和狩猎比重增加.全新世中期以前的高海平面环境意味着东部沿海平原地区稻作源头可能在山区、丘陵的一些小盆地.
