Notes from Pallet Town
September 22, 2019 – February 23, 2020 UCCA Dune, Hebei Province
“Pallet Town” in the title refers to the hometown of the protagonist of Pokémon, a 1990s Japanese video game and anime series. Its inspiration, Japan’s Shimoda City, played an important role in Japan’s opening up in the 1950s. In a certain sense, the construction environment in China is close to achieving the futuristic, idyllic sheen found in Pallet Town.
Based on the concept, three groups of artists involved in this exhibition discuss the present urban modernization in China. They created installations using glass microspheres and an air compressor to create a rainbow, using discarded goods as materials and assembling them into sculptures and installations or producing 3D printed art massively distorted by neural network processing. They aim to spark reflection on a quietly prosperous society, technology, the natural world and even the supernatural.

A Turning Moment: Urban Narratives in Chinese Contemporary Art, 1995-2019
October 18 – December 15, 2019 Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai
The exhibition features works by 17 contemporary Chinese artists in such diverse media as installation, painting, photography, video and sculpture. Together, they construct a vision of Chinese contemporary art in public spaces since the mid-1990s that has reflected the social environment, urban space and people.
The show includes the special project “Dial 62761232.” First launched in September 2004,“Dial 62761232” highlights the human role in progressing urbanization as well as contemporary art’s role in modern Chinese metropolises. The experimental piece involves 42 artists working with 15 couriers to bring the exhibition to the homes of patrons. Each courier receives a call and a suitcase containing art to be taken somewhere.
Li Lang Solo Exhibition: A Long Day of a Certain Year
September 21 – November 21, 2019 A Thousand Plateaus Art Space, Chengdu
The series “A Long Day of a Certain Year” was captured on a high-speed train running along the 2,300-kilometer-long Beijing-Guangzhou Railway. The train passes many cities, towns and villages in China. The artist took photos of the landscape outside the window along the way to do statistical sampling and invited many volunteers to share their own life experiences. The content of the conversation is personal but cannot be stripped of reality. Individual life eventually produces busy intersections. Li Lang, born in 1969, is a representative Chinese contemporary documentary photographer. He now lives and works in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. In 1999, he won the Mother Jones Medal of Excellence. His works have been collected by many major institutions such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Shanghai Museum of Art.
