On the morning of January 9, 2009, the National Science and Technology Awards Conference was held in the Great Hall of the People in the light and flowers of Jingyan. This is a beautiful date for science and technology once a year. It is also the highest reviewing platform for China’s independent innovation achievements. When President Hu Jintao personally handed the 2008 National Highest Science and Technology Award to Academician Xu Guangxian, the audience rang up with a long-lasting applause. Fifty-seven years ago, Xu Guangxian and his wife Gao Xiaoxia traveled far away from the United States to return to the motherland. “We must devote all our knowledge to the motherland.” Today, fifty-seven years later, Xu Guangxian honored his original promise. Xu Guangxian’s achievements and contributions lie in that his theory has made China’s rare earth separation technology and industrialization rank first in the world. The comprehensive application of this theory has led to a significant drop in the cost of rare earth separation in China, and the rapid increase in output and quality, which has broken the monopoly of developed countries. This old man who was nearly ninety years old is now the senior professor of Peking University and honorary director of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Rare Earth Materials Chemistry. He is still active at the frontier of scientific research, and often goes to visit the remote mining area to work hard for the optimal use of rare earth resources.
