竹者,枝叶挺韧、凌寒不凋,虚心劲节、刚柔兼备,正与儒、道文化所追求的君子之风相契合。因此,竹也被赋予了清高、坚韧、虚怀、避俗等广泛的精神内涵,成为历代画家抒放林泉之心,排解俗世纷扰的最佳画题。吴昌硕八十岁(一九二三年)所作的《掩映清光竹一丛》(图一),现藏于中国美术馆,是其墨竹画的代表作品。
