An analysis of the mining conditions of gently inclined coal seams by the Institute of Surveying and Mapping and All the Mining Research Institutes shows that about 70% of the coal beds below the rock are unstable and the allowable exposed area of the roof is less than 8-2. Especially in the gently inclined thin seam (thickness less than 1.3 meters), unstable roof is very common. However, up to now no fully-mechanized mining equipment suitable for mining such thin coal seams has been developed.
