吉祥物是人类原始文化的产物,是原始的人类在同大自然的斗争中形成的人类原始的文化。在这种同大自然的斗争中,人类首先以生存需要为中心,而在发展过程中自然就形成趋吉避邪的本能观念。吉祥物专为特定的活动目的,以人物、动物、植物、自然物或人造物,依照吉祥或积极的主题,以拟人化或卡通化手法创造出的具象化造形。“吉祥物”一词现在几乎已取代了“企业造型”的称谓;由于识别更具亲和力的机能,现已延伸出各种用法如活动吉祥物、运动会吉祥物、展示吉祥物以及促销吉祥物等。吉祥物设计是门综合性学科,它不仅要考虑平面视觉效果,又要考虑制成以后的效果,以及材质应用等多方面问题。即使平面效果再好,将来无法立体化利用,也不能称为是完美作品。
