Objective To investigate the dynamic changes of endothelin (ET) in patients with various types of cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and further reveal the relationship between ET and the occurrence and development of various types of CVD. Methods The present study dynamically observed changes in plasma ET levels in 95 patients with cerebral infarction, 57 patients with cerebral hemorrhage and 27 patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage. Results (1) Plasma ET levels in all types of CVD patients were significantly higher than those in the control group (P <0001). (2) Plasma ET levels began to increase within 24 hours after onset of CVD in patients with CVD, reaching peak at 1 ~ 3 days or 4 ~ 7 days after onset, then decreasing after half a month, then decreasing to normal or slightly higher than normal after January. Conclusions The results of this study indicate that the process of ET elevation after CVD is consistent with the development of ischemic penumbra, cerebral edema and cerebral vasospasm after CVD. ET involved in the occurrence and development of CVD
