当代画坛,真正称得上鹤发童颜的画家或许只有吴山明。但真正使吴山明在画坛之上独特起来的还是其意笔人物。以传统衡之,吴之笔墨——中锋、宿墨——并无更多的创意,他的创意在于笔和墨都涵泳在水性之中。他把笔与墨的理性调控同水的感性浸透有机地融合起来,进而有了自己独特的艺术样式——微甘,也微苦。范景中曾三论吴氏之“气”。一曰“以山水点苔之法增神采”;二曰:“以北碑南帖之线立骨气”;三曰:“以积墨和宿墨法求幽淡苍茫。”
