苘麻可用于制作绳索的性能、广泛的地域分布以及较低廉的价格,使其成为重要的治河材料。作为国家主导的大型公共工程,明清时期的黄河治理对苘麻的需求量极大,促进了苘麻的种植,而苘麻的使用与采办有效地确保了河流的安澜,凸显了农业社会在治水活动中的重要作用。但由于吏治腐败等原因,苘麻的种植、采办、储存、使用等环节,给区域环境、社会带来一定的负面影响。
