土石坝在外水压力、地震力、自重、孔隙水压力等内外荷载作用下,对填土的稳定性和防渗性要求较高。而填土的自身稳定,主要靠土料内部的阻力(内摩擦力和凝聚力)来维持。但无论土料的内摩擦力和凝聚力以及土料的防渗性能都与土料的密实度密切相关,它们都是随着填土密实度的增大而提高的。例如,将干密度为1.4g/cm~2的砂壤土压实后干密度提高到1.7g/cm~3,其抗剪强度可提高4倍,其渗透系数可降低2000倍。所以土石坝的填土压实,可改善填土的力学性质和工程性质,使压实上的抗剪强度增加,
