A dermatologist at Ruhr University in Germany found that skin with a depth of 0.25 to 0.4 mm on the surface of the body would receive oxygen directly from the air outside the body. This depth is 10 times higher than the previous estimate. The skin layer from which oxygen is obtained in vitro includes the entire epidermis, the outermost living cells, and a portion of the dermis that contains sweat glands and hair follicles.
