李善在为《文选》作注时引用了大量现在已经亡佚的古书。引用之书涵盖经史子集及旧注,李善所引之书及旧注种类数量以集部的最多有八百多;引用种类次于集部的是史部典籍,将近四百;种类位于四部第三的是子部之书,均二百一十余;引用种类最少的的经部,但是如果从单篇的引用数目上看经部著作的数量却是最多的。这些为我们的辑佚工作提供了可靠的资料支持和丰富的辑佚线索。
