陶湘,江苏武进人,字兰泉,号涉园,清同治九年(一八七○)七月十七日生于浙江慈溪县典史署,卒于民国二十八年(一九三九)。光绪五年(一八七九),因其伯父一支人丁稀少,陶湘承嗣到伯父家,并随任到山东恩县读书。二十岁时,陶湘随族兄赴顺天应试不第,次年被大兴县学以鸿胪寺序班保送入顺天学政,验准后送部咨寺到官。
