从《血劫》到《第五种武器》，高光小说中始终凝聚着对战争的现代性审视。他有意识地拒绝了政治权力观念对战争的图解，用民间文化形态的生动精神，弥补了历史概念所造成的艺术缺席。将历史的宏大叙事改造成为个体生命的生生死死。在表现战争的生活场景与人性的复杂变化方面，显出了出人意料的艺术想象力。但他没有因为对人性和个体生命的关注而压抑或放弃了对民族根性的挖掘。因而，他的小说中不仅涌动着人性与个体生命的活力，同时也呈现出丰厚的民族文化底蕴和现代性精神内涵。
