In collaboration with Mitsubishi Aluminum Corporation and Tokai Graphite Corporation, JR Research successfully developed the aluminum alloy light disc brakes for Shinkansen. This type of brake has been developed from 1984 to reduce the unsprung mass of the vehicle which has a bad influence on the rail. Although aluminum is light, but its hardness and melting point are low, good braking performance can not be obtained. Therefore, aluminum has been considered unsuitable as a brake material in the past. However, the brake disc put into practical use this time is made of aluminum alloy containing ceramic particles, and newly developed a brake disc to stop the rotation of the brake pad material. Various tests were carried out at a maximum speed of 230 km / h between the Hakata-Kokura station using the light train of JR West Japan and achieved good results. JR Research Institute hopes this material will be used in the future
