Hypoglycemia is a common complication in patients with adult falciparum malaria in Thailand. Quinine stimulate the insulin release of the pancreas is an important cause of hypoglycemia. But chloroquine, which is widely used in Africa, does not cause an increase in insulin release. The authors propose a predictive study to evaluate the importance of hypoglycaemia in children with severe malaria in Africa, based on 2 children with deadly falciparum malaria who are treated with chloroquine and who have high levels of hypoglycemia.
