This research uses the interviews and discussion records of judges, experts and instructors in the preliminaries of the 2006 “CCTV Cup” English Speech Contest in a university in Dalian and the national finals stage to classify and analyze the qualitative data therein, Quantitative analysis and statistics show that there is a big difference between the aesthetic requirements reflected in the preliminary rounds and the final rounds. In the preliminary round, the judges pay more attention to pronunciation and tone, correct grammar and fluency, and in the final stage, the contestants must demonstrate the comprehensive aesthetics in the meaning of the works, the emotional use and the intellectual factors to win. On the other hand, this reflects that oral teaching is still limited to the traditional phonetic and grammatical aspects and does not pay enough attention to students’ expressiveness and ideological accomplishment.
