龙在中国百姓心目中是吉兆和智慧的象征,也是人与天、神沟通的媒介,被赋予了主宰风雨、载人升天、降临祥瑞等等神奇功能。在中国古代,龙还被引入到古天象学、命理学以及帝王政治等领域,被赋予了浓厚的神秘色彩。龙的形象实际上是古人综合了许多动物的特征想象而成的一种神物。东汉时期,许慎在《说文解字》一书中描绘龙是“鳞虫之长,能幽能明,能细能巨,春分而登天,秋分而潜渊”。各个时代对龙纹的理解不同,因而龙形玉器各有差异。探讨和研究历代玉器上的龙纹图案,可以使我们了解中国龙的发展和演变过程,对于古玉器的鉴定和断代也是一种非常重要的依据。以下对史前时期到汉代的龙纹玉器的基本特征作一简单的综合论述。
