In Tennessee, USA, the capacity of a structural engineer is measured by how long he can design a bridge without swell. Almost all of our newly built (the last 20 years) highway bridges, up to 100 meters or more designed to do without seams, and even bridge abutments are not seams. If the bridge is very long, we only set crevices in the abutment. Seams and supports are expensive to buy and install, and finally seams leak easily. Water and salts leak into the underlying superstructure and piers. Many of the most expensive maintenance projects originate in seepage seams. So we want to increase the length and minimize the seams.
