Objective To understand the inter-temporal changes of first-year students’ admission and mental health and to test the causal relationship between the two in order to provide a basis for understanding the mental health of first-year students and the rules for school admission. Methods The mental health and school adjustment level of 87 freshmen in Guoxing Middle School of Hainan Province were measured respectively at the second month of admission and the first month of the first year. Results There was a general downward trend in school adaptation at two time points, but there was a significant difference only in interpersonal adaptation (P <0.01). There was no significant correlation between school adaptation measured before and after; mental health status was There was an overall upward trend at 2 time points, and there were significant differences in the three dimensions of allergy tendency, body symptoms and impulses (P <0.05), and there was a positive correlation between mental health measured before and after. Cross-time correlation analysis showed that school adaptation and mental health were positively correlated. Multiple regression analysis showed that pre-test mental health predicts post-test school adjustment and mental health. Conclusions The mental health level of first-year students may have consistent across time in individuals, and may affect the individual’s adaptive behavior as a causal variable.
