我以为中国现代艺术在整体上近期要取得伟大成就是不可能的,特别是想在短时期内一跃而就“走向世界”只能是痴心妄想,这是因为良好的愿望、冲动的热情决不能替代残酷的现实。这并非是悲观地视前程毫无指望,而是希望排除盲目乐观、自以为是的情绪(这点在我的中国同胞身上尤为突出,往往或明或暗的存在着)。因为我们所选择的是一条荆棘之路,非常人可行。只有当国力强盛、经济发达、人的文化素养普遍提高,现代艺术才有发展,才有可能从整体上与西方对话。
