据统计,自1954年以来,铁道兵共伤亡6万余人,其中有6600多人牺牲,近54500人负伤。这与铁道兵在极端恶劣的自然、地理环境下施工是分不开的。每当一条新的铁路竣工,当列车在崇山峻岭中奔弛时,倾听声声汽笛的,是那些长眠在铁路沿线的铁道兵烈士。1953年9月9日,中央军委决定组建铁道兵领导机关,从此,铁道兵正式作为一个兵种列入人民解放军序列。1982年12月6日,中共中央决定,将铁道兵部队集体转业并入铁道部,铁道兵各师分别改称铁道部各工程局。
