四川地区在中国文化地理上是一个特殊的区域。它远处西部山区的四川盆地,东北距京畿首善之区、东南距江浙的人文中心都有上千公里之遥,其间关山阻隔,但四川不仅民殷物富,而且自秦、汉以来,文化事业就极为发达,形成西部中国一个巨大的经济中心、文化中心和政治中心,自古以来就人才辈出,不断对中国文化作出重要的贡献。四川地区的绘画艺术自汉唐以来就已形成独特的传统,虽然历时既久,变迁巨大,但直到近代,还是别有一种风度,既不同于京、津,又不同于浙、沪,至于长安、岭南、金陵等地区的绘画,则更与之有巨大的区别。它的内涵广阔,门派滋多,包容复杂,不是其他地区画派风格较趋单一的情况可比,姑称之为四川画派。序章百年四川画派鸟瞰20世纪以来,四川在中国文化所经历的现代大变局中,承担了许多责任与磨难,
