清代的紫禁城,每日半夜子正三刻,东华门就会准时开门,门外早有一辆骡车等候,车不挂灯,于黑灯瞎火中,由赶车的老太婆驱车直入内东华门,沿着宫墙而行,不知何往。而东华门外,每天都有许多从外省进京递送奏折的下级武官,以及等候皇帝宣召的大臣。起初大家看到这辆能在紫禁城内行走的骡车,都感到很奇怪,不知道车上拉的是什么东西,更不知道赶车的老太婆是什么身份,竟然能够享受到如此待遇。
