October 17, 1988 The Nobel Prize Committee at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm announced the award of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to two American scientists, Gertrude Elion and George Hitchings In recognition of their achievements in the development of drugs for the treatment of cancer, gout, malaria or viral diseases; and James Black, a British scientist, to reward him for his contribution to the development of medicines to control heart and ulcer diseases. The jury pointed out that over the years the development of new drugs is to rebuild the molecular structure of natural medicine, and these scientists are based on the results of basic research of physiology and biochemistry to create new drugs, therefore put forward a more reasonable research approach and principle. The 83-year-old Hitchings and 70-year-old Elion started a collaborative study when they worked at Welcome Pharmaceuticals more than 40 years ago,
