建国以来,我国许多小麦育种研究机构,培育了一批又一批小麦优良品种,发挥了良种的增产效益。当然,我们也应看到,我国从国外引进小麦品种并进行大面积推广,也获得很大成效。尤其引进意大利小麦品种,成绩更为突出,如“南大2419”、“矮立多”、“吉利”、“阿夫”、“阿勃”、“阿桑”、“郑引一号”、“盖美丽”、“斯特朗别里”和“留伯鲁拉”等,均来源于意大利。它们在我国小麦生产中,不仅播种面积大,适应地区广,而且还获得大面积高产。正因为如此,对意大利的小麦育种方法及其特点,很自然地要引起重视与关注。笔者曾于一九七三和一九七四年前后两次赴意大利参加考察活动,特别是一九七四年,着重对意大利小麦育种家马利亚尼(C.Maliani)教授的育种技术进行实地考察。
