机车轴式根据机车驱动装置、转向架及车体设计制造发展的结果,现已能够制造轻型大功率机车。近年来内燃机车和电力机车已采用无导轮全粘着重式走行部。由于日本使用的是轻型线路结构,虽然交流电力机车及中型直流电力机事和内燃机车采用四动轴,但大部份大功率的内燃机车和直流电力机车是作成六动轴的。同样因线路关系,有些四动轴机车虽已具备相当的牵引能力,当其需要为列车取暖装设蒸汽锅
