IntroductionReorganization of drainage and landscape is common in dry lands,and is believed to have affected the survival of societies living along the rivers. In India, studies on the ancient Saraswati River and the Harappan civilization along its banks have suggested that climate change and tectonics were major responsible factors for changes in the river systems and evolution of early settlements (Stein, 1942;Ghose et al., 1979, 1980; Valdiya 2002, 2013; Tripathi et al., 2004;Bhadra et al., 2009; Clift et al., 2012; Giosan et al., 2012).
