The scientific goal of the ODP 2 0 2 voyage is palaeooceanography, which is to assess the changes of climate and oceanography in the late Tertiary in the southeastern Pacific. Drilling research covers three major aspects and will explore the climate system in three different but not contradictory dimensions: construction (millions of years), Earth’s orbit (tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of years), millennium scale (millennium).
