激光在医学领域的应用不久以前还只限于用激光手术刀、激光凝固器等解决手术及治疗的问题。这只不过是将激光器用作高强度能源。至于激光的相干性、单色性等则未加以利用。激光的相干性不仅在医学检查,而且在自然科学、工农业方面已广泛用于非接触、无损检测。其重要性正日益增加。激光在临床检查上的应用正进入一个新阶段,主要由于以下几方面的原因: (1)各种激光器已从实验室中使用,发展到在常规测量中用作光源。 (2)各种优质光导纤维及有关部件的普及。 (3)各种传感器及高灵敏度光检测器容易得到。激光内窥镜、激光多普勒法、激光流动细胞计数、激光比浊法以及最近更多受到重视的激光激发荧光法对癌的诊断和治疗等可认为均由于上述进展而最早得到实现。
