中学乐队教师乔伊·加德纳（Joe Gardner）对爵士乐（Jazz）非常痴迷。当他终于有机会与知名乐手多萝西娅（Dorothea）同台演出时，不慎“灵魂出窍”，来到一个名为“生之来处”（the Great Before）的神秘之地。在那里，每个灵魂宝宝都将被随机分配个性，并在找到“人生火花”（spark）后获得去地球（the Earth）的通行证。为了让灵魂（soul）重回自己的身体，Joe成为灵魂宝宝“22号”的导师。经过一场心灵奇旅，他们终于领悟到了人生真正的意义……

Joe以前教過的学生柯利（Curley），现在是一个Jazz乐队的新鼓手。今晚，他们将在纽约最好的俱乐部进行表演。Curley打电话邀请Joe加入他们的乐队。Joe一听能和Dorothea同台演出，感觉非常值得。
