福琼最早受雇于爱丁堡植物园,稍后转至英国皇家园艺学会在伦敦的植物园。他分别在1843年至1845年、1848年至1851年、1853年至1856年和1861年四次来中国研究采集植物,足迹遍布东南沿海各地和华北诸省。他将自己在中国的经历写成《华北诸省漫游三年记》(1847)、《中国茶乡之行》(1852)、《两访中国茶乡和喜马拉雅山麓的英国茶园》(1853)、《居住在华人之间》(1857)
Joan was first employed at Edinburgh Botanic Gardens and later moved to the Botanic Gardens of the Royal Society of Horticulture in London. He collected plants in China four times from 1843 to 1845, from 1848 to 1851, from 1853 to 1856 and from 1861 respectively, covering all parts of the southeast coast and the provinces of North China. He described his experience in China as “Three Years of Roaming in Northern China Provinces” (1847), “Trip to China and Countryside” (1852), “Two Visit to Tea House in China and the British Tea Garden at the Himalayan Foothills” (1853), “ Living between Chinese ”(1857)
