According to Japan’s Asahi Shimbun, Japan’s electronics giant NEC has developed the world’s smallest transistor, allowing the size of the future supercomputer equivalent to the current desktop. This transistor’s volume is equivalent to only one eighteenth of the most common mass production. According to reports, a typical area of one square centimeter of semiconductor chips can accommodate 40 billion such transistors, about 150 times the current capacity. NEC will continue to develop this technology with the goal of mass production of such transistors beginning in 2020.
