Cerium metal in vitro for a variety of bacteria and fungi have obvious toxic effects. There have been no studies on its clinical anti-inflammatory effects on burns and other wounds. It is currently known that when used topically, it is substantially non-toxic because many cerium salts are insoluble. Preliminary in vitro experiments show that cerium salts on the human body burn a variety of bacteria at low concentrations that have antibacterial effect. The authors describe the results of the treatment of 60 patients with burn wounds locally treated with cerium nitrate cream or water solution. Cerium nitrate has an anti-inflammatory effect on burn wounds, especially against Gram-negative bacteria and fungi.
