20世纪90年代初,美军为建设21世纪陆军,提出了战场数字化的新概念,目的是用电子纽带把战场空间的每个武器系统连接起来,使指挥员得以协调战场上的诸要素,从而达到对敌人的毁灭性效果。要实现战场数字化,首先要解决武器平台的数字化问题,数字化坦克随之应运而生。所谓数字化坦克是指以信息技术为核心技术的主战坦克,这种坦克将内部的电子电气系统综合化,实现信息共享,并通过车际信息系统与战场C3I系统进行信息交换。目前,世界上的数字化坦克主要有美国的M1A2/M1A2SEP坦克、英国的“挑战者”2坦克、法国的“勒克莱尔”坦克、德国的“豹”2A6坦克、俄罗斯的T-90坦克等。
