“象”这个概念,渊源于先秦哲学领域,一般指酷似于某人某物的形体状貌,也指文学艺术作品中创造的艺术形象。象外之象、言外之意、味外之味、韵外之致、景外之景等,都是我国道家和释家诗学传统的一些概念,其来源是老子对“道”的阐释,即“大音希声,大象无形”的思想。文人便将“言外之意”、“韵外之致”、“象外之象”当作自己最高的审美标准,以求达到言有尽而意无穷的效果。
