In the Yuan Dynasty, Tibetan Buddhism started to spread northward into Tibet from Tibet northward, bringing a new kind of religion and culture to Mongolian grasslands. Its dissemination not only exerted a profound influence on the political, religious, cultural and ideological fields of Mongolian society, but also strengthened the ties between the upper ruling class of Tibet and the Mongolian royal family. This article focuses on the early contact between Tibetan Buddhism and Mongolian people and Mongolian royal family’s attitude toward Buddhism and the reason why Tibetan Buddhism in the Yuan Dynasty could spread and develop in Mongolia.
