In general computer terms, a multimedia PC is equipped with a CD-ROM drive and a sound card on a personal computer. Although this popular definition has become widely accepted, MPC (Mukimedia PC) has its formal definition and has just undergone a major escalation. In June 1995, the MPC Working Group (an interactive multimedia working group under the Software Publishing Association) passed the Third Generation Multimedia PC (MPC3) specification. This specification sets new standards for the pan-and-tilt performance of personal computers. The MPC3 specification sets a standard for software developers to develop multimedia-based applications. This specification is much more rigorous than the one passed in 1993. For example, the new specification raises the minimum memory requirement from 4M to 8M, and the bottom of the microprocessor is originally the 486MHz at 16MHz, now a 75MHz Pentium or equivalent processor. To meet the needs of the new specification, the system manufacturer must also add a four-speed optical drive and a hardware accelerator for digital video. The MPC2 specification only requires - a double speed optical drive, and no mention of video plus
