The role played by the Indian Ocean in maritime Silk Road is equal to the role of Central Asia in land-based Silk Road. On the routes connecting China, Africa and Europe, there is no better place than the ports in southern India for stopover and open transit. Sri Lanka, an island nation on the southern tip of the South Asian subcontinent, is an irreplaceable site of maritime Silk Road with its strategic location. Sri Lanka has an important role to play in the long-standing maritime commerce in ancient times and in today’s vision of building a maritime Silk Road in the 21st century. Combining the historic links between Sri Lanka and the Silk Road at sea and Sri Lanka’s historic attitude towards maritime diplomacy can contribute to the formulation of a cultural strategy to promote Sri Lanka’s participation in the maritime Silk Road.
