当地时间2010年4月5日下午,美国西弗吉尼亚州首府查尔斯顿附近煤矿发生爆炸事故。2010年4月25日,美国总统奥巴马和副总统拜登参加悼念在矿难中死亡的29名矿工的仪式并致辞,奥巴马的致辞既表达出美国政府对遇难矿工的深切哀悼,又成功维护了美国政府在民众心中的形象。文章以奥巴马在此仪式上的致辞为语料,从情态系统的角度对其进行批评分析,以揭示奥巴马演讲背后的意识形态和政治立场。
On the afternoon of April 5, 2010, local coal mines exploded in the coal mine near Charleston, the capital of West Virginia. On April 25, 2010, US President Barack Obama and Vice President Biden attended the ceremony to pay tribute to the mourning of the 29 miners who died in the mine accident. Obama’s speech not only expressed the United States government’s deep condolences to the dead miners, but also successfully maintained the United States Government image in the hearts of the people. The essay takes Obama’s speech at this ceremony as a corpus, criticizes it from the perspective of modality system to reveal the ideology and political stand behind Obama’s speech.
