This article describes the diesel locomotive data collection system that is being tested on the US Coastal Railway. The system is the first step in automatically retrieving maintenance data for the main components of a locomotive on a regular basis. There are currently 20 recorders installed on 3600 horsepower four-axle diesel locomotives. The system is used to monitor the continuity of certain circuits and check the mechanical and electrical conditions of the locomotive components. Appropriate parameters of pressure, temperature, speed, voltage and current are recorded on the tape during a predetermined interval. Remove the tape cassette from the locomotive data recorder, transfer the data to a data processing center via a communications link, analyze the data there, and inform the service personnel of the analysis.
